Chapter 12 - Busy
Let's do my best again today. First let's have breakfast.
I left my room and went down to the dining hall. Ron, Yato, and the elves were already there.
"Good morning." (Fell)
"Oh, good morning. I just had my breakfast and it was also delicious." (Mittor)
I looked at a plate in front of Mittor that was already empty. The other elves' plates were also in the same condition.
There's a trace of tomato sauce on their plates, so it's either omelette or bacon and egg. Eating egg dish for breakfast, I feel like something good will happen today.
"It's only natural that Nia's cooking is delicious. Yato, I want to have breakfast, too." (Fell)
"Understood, ~nya." (Yato)

That was delicious. Omelette is still the best dish, after all. When I return to the demon world, I would give preferential treatment to chickens that aren't cockatrices. Now then, it's going to be a busy day, so let's get started. First, let's ask about Mittor's schedule for today. If he's free after this, let's bring him to meet the rhinoceros beetle.
"By the way, when will you go back to the elven village?" (Fell)
"In the afternoon. I'm thinking of having lunch here first before we go home." (Mittor)
The others elves nodded in unison. They seemed to have been completely captivated by Nia's cooking.
There's still plenty of time. Let's tell Mittor about the beetle's transportation business plan.
"By the way, the beetle that I brought back the other day said that he wanted to make a round trip between this village and the elven village on a regular basis. (Fell)
"I have no idea what you're talking about, Fell. Is this some kind of joke?" (Mittor)
I know I have no sense of humor. That's why I don't joke. I'm always serious.
"It's not a joke. The beetle himself gave me a presentation. I think it was a pretty good proposal, with the economic benefits and cost-effectiveness." (Fell)
“You are obviously fooling me! Something like the beetle gave a presentation.... but I guess it's possible since we are talking about you here...." (Mittor)
Mittor seems to be willing to listen at least. Let's bring him to meet the beetle and leave the rest to them. I'm a capable woman who can assign works to those around her.
“I'll let you meet the beetle for now. You can decide what to do after that." (Fell)
I tried to invite the other elves to go with us, but everyone said that they had another plans already.
The male elves seems to have something to discuss with Ron. I can hear them muttering cat ears, waitress uniform, and so on. It's probably something useless. Meanwhile, the female elves are going to join Yato in Nia's cooking class after this. They apparently want to bring back some of Nia’s recipes to the elven village.
Alright, let’s go to the field!
-

-
My field is quite peaceful today. Conflict produces nothing. They seem to have realized it at last.
Near the field, the rhinoceros beetles are talking with each other. They are exchanging information about how much food they were getting, the recent sap situation, jealousy toward stag beetles, and so on. There's a lot going on in the beetle world, too.
"Mittor, do you understand the beetle’s language?" (Fell)
"Of course not." (Mittor)
I guess we will need an interpreter. Maybe I should ask Josephine, who's dancing in the field.
Josephine willingly accepted the role like a model boss, saying it was for my subordinates. However, she said that it would cost me one large copper coin for an hour for some reason.
"Josephine will translate and write the rhinoceros beetle's words on her signboard. You can also ask them things like whether there's a demand for the transportation business, and if so, what the price would be, and then decide whether to actually do it. I'll leave the rest to you." (Fell)
"Josephine is the slime that knocked me out with one hit, right? If I reject the proposal, she won't resort to violence, right?" (Mittor)
"There's a chance. Don't give in to violence." (Fell)
"Tell her not to!" (Mittor)
"My slimes don't really listen to what I say.... Well, I'm busy today. I leave the rest to you." (Fell)
Mittor is still protesting behind me, but I don't have time to worry about him right now. Next let's ask the minotaurs and the orcs how yesterday's work went.
-
-
-
Oh, there are two huts now. I guess one for the cockatrices and one for the minotaurs and orcs.
When I knocked on the larger hut, a minotaur came out. I told him I wanted to hear about yesterday's work, and he called everyone over.
The minotaurs’ reclamation work seems quite rewarding. They enjoyed cutting trees with their axes. There was a wild boar appeared, and when they killed it, the villagers were praising them. They look quite proud when explaining it. The wild boar they killed was brought back to the inn and served as dinner last night. I wonder if the hamburger steak I ate was from the meat of the wild boar they killed.
The orcs' hunting work seems quite rewarding as well. Yesterday, the married man showed them his usual hunting ground. They hunted a wild boar and learned how to drain the blood from him. They also found some nuts and mushrooms while hunting and were really happy. I guess mushrooms are their favorite food. I've never tried it, but I heard mushrooms that grow in the ground are extremely delicious.
The cockatrices have decided to work with Elizabeth on garbage collection business. They're pretty motivated since Via will buy the stones. I was told that they have never been this happy because someone find other value in their petrification ability. Even though it's just a prototype, Via also gave them magic tools to store things, so their respectability level towards her is pretty high. In fact, it seems they respect her more than me.
From what I've heard, there doesn't seem to be any problem. The villagers are grateful to them, so I guess it's fine to let them continue with their respective jobs.
I told them to keep the good work and left the field.
My next destination is the church.
-
-
-
When I entered the church there was no one inside.
Did I come too early? Let's look around to kill time until the old man arrives.
I'm sure he would use this statue to communicate telepathically. The time and place for telepathic communication is specified, so maybe it's not the right time yet. Come to think of it, this Goddess is one of the seven Gods of this world. No, there are only five remaining now. I wonder if Maou-sama will kill her as well.
That’s right, Maou-sama told me that there are no gods in this world. There are only those who think they are gods. In other words, this Goddess isn't actually a god. I guess I shouldn't tell this to the old man. He probably won't believe me, but I shouldn't say anything unnecessary. Instead, let's ask the old man to explain about the Goddess. There's nothing wrong in learning about your opponents.
While I was thinking about this, the old man walked in through the entrance.
"Oh, you are already here at the church this early. Have you finally converted to the Goddess Religion?" (Priest)
"Enough about that. You are going to contact the Leanne town's church, right? Do it quickly and find out what happened to the nun. I have to make a preparation if I still need to go there." (Fell)
I have to report this to Maou-sama, too.
"I appreciate your enthusiasm. I'll contact them right now, so can you please wait for a bit?" (Priest)
"Got it." (Fell)
Looks like the telepathy function can be used even at this hour. Then I'll just sit in the chair and wait.
The old man touched the goddess statue which seemed to be connected to a certain telepathic channel and activated it.
The statue has been imbued with brainwashing magic, but is this okay? If the old man get brainwashed and attacks me, I'll fight back.
The old man nodded as he talked with the other party using telepathy. But suddenly, he yelled out 'What did you say?' and looked frustrated.
Did something happen?
After that, the old man looked at me and smiled wickedly. Just like that, the telepathic communication ended, and the old man cut off the connection to the channel.
"What happened? From your expression, I don't it's a good news." (Fell)
"In short, the nun has never arrived at the church. There was confirmation that she entered the town, but no one knows her whereabouts after that." (Priest)
If she isn't there, then I guess there won't be any escort requests. Oh well, it's not like I want this job no matter what.
"So, anyway, could you please go to Leanne town and search for her?" (Priest)
"You want me to search for her? That's not an escort job, right?" (Fell)
"That's right. This is a request to find a person. It's also a proper job for adventurers." (Priest)
Is that so? There are no jobs at the adventurer's guild in this village, so I can't judge. But if you take serving customers as a waitress into consideration, I guess finding a person is also a job for adventurers. I'd do it if I could make some money, but since there's no guarantee that I'll find her, I'm not too eager to accept this request.
"The fee is one large gold coin. Not including the expenses. Plus, I will pay you separately for escorting her to the village after you find her." (Priest)
"I accept." (Fell)
There's no way I'm going to pass up a job that pays one large gold coin. That being said, I can't look for her indefinitely.
"However, I have some conditions. The period of this job is ten days. If I still can't find her after ten days, I won't charge you for the request fee, but you still have to pay for my expenses. Is that okay?" (Fell)
"Sure, I don't mind. I'll leave it to you. I'll add those conditions to the adventurer's guild request form, so you don't have to worry." (Priest)
The contract is concluded with this. Even so, he doesn't hesitate to spend a lot of money on this request. I wonder what happened during the telepathic communication.
"The money will be coming from this church's budget, right? It's quite expensive. Do you have enough money?" (Fell)
"The priest over there said, 'Why don't you hire an adventurer to search for her? I will cover the costs.', so you don't have to worry about that." (Priest)
Old man. You have the face of a villain right now. Hold back a little. But isn't the priest over there actually a good guy? He said he'd cover the costs, after all.
"I know what he's up to. He's on good terms with the guildmaster of the adventurer guild over there. He's probably planning to use his connection to prevent adventurers from taking on this request." (Priest)
I see. If no one's willing to take on this request, then there's no need to pay.
The old man laughed again.
Old man, that's a face that a priest should not make. You should look at yourself in the mirror.
"He miscalculated, thinking that there were no adventurers in this village. Request forms can be issued in this village, and there is you, an adventurer, here. Hehehehe, I can imagine his surprised face. It's a shame I can't see it in person, though." (Priest)
You're mean, old man. But I don't care as long as I get paid. If possible, let's find the nun and get one large gold coin as a reward.
"Now then, let's go to the adventurer's guild to complete the paperwork." (Priest)
I can imagine Dia's surprised face. Maybe she'll go half-crazy.
